Participatory Budgeting: Real Money, Real Power

The Baltimore City Council is planning a groundbreaking participatory budgeting (PB) process for a new Council Youth Fund. We want you to learn more about the national success of this revolutionary idea and how together we can use it to ensure those who actually live in and love the city decide what Baltimore will be.

We need Baltimore residents to join the planning committee that will draft a plan for the process, to lift up the voice of Baltimore City residents.

PB is an innovative, democratic process granting you real power over real money. It is a model for cities around the country. Chicago, San Francisco, and New York have all found great success through participatory budgeting. It is time Baltimore shares this success as we make the democratic process truly our own.

PB guarantees that our voices are head in local government. Through directly involving our young residents in the budgeting and city-building process we will foster civic engagement and community inclusion, and help ensure that the city's plans reflect our own priorities.

Between September and December 2016, youth, city staff, and community organizations will work together to cradt a concrete plan for the initiative. The planning work, supported by the Annie E Casey Foundation and the T. Rowe Foundation, will be spearheaded jointly by nonprofits Strong City Baltimore and Participatory Budgeting Project.

Want to know more? Interested in getting involved? Do you believe the community deserves to be heard? Strong City Baltimore will host two information sessions. The first will be held onMonday, September 26 from 5:00 PM to 6:30 PM at the 29th Street Community Center.

To RSVP for the information session, please register on Eventbrite.

Planting seeds of change in Baltimore

Dear Baltimoreans,

Tuesday marked an exciting time for change in Baltimore’s Broadway East community.

An initiative to replace a brownfield site with a multi-million dollar historic renovation that will create jobs and spur additional workforce development and educational opportunities kicked off Tuesday with the announcement of the Baltimore Food Hub.

I was pleased to join a host of elected officials and a representative from the federal government to announce the redevelopment of a 3.5-acre site in Baltimore’s Broadway East community. The $23.5 million historic renovation will make healthy foods available and affordable for community members. The project will also help reduce health disparities and help citizens lead healthier lives.

Home to the old Baltimore City Water works Pumping and Repair Station, the campus, which until recently was city-owned property, stands as part of the front door that people see as they’re traveling through Baltimore by train. This development will help revitalize an important part of Baltimore and begin to connect Baltimoreans to a rapidly expanding economic opportunities through food clusters.

For more information on the development project or to get involved, please visithttp://www.baltimorefoodhub.com/.

Sincerely,

Bernard C. "Jack" Young
President, Baltimore City Council

On Tuesday, Council President Young joined State Senator Catherine Pugh and Councilman Eric Costello at the ribbon cutting of the Linden Park affordable senior apartments on McMechen Street.

On Saturday, Council President Young spoke with students at the New Shiloh Baptist Church as part of the Male Teens In The Hood program.

On Saturday, Council President Young joined Health Commissioner Dr. Lena Wen at the Druid Health Center Community Health Fair on North Avenue.

Changes to Water Bills for City Residents
Begins September 1, 2016
http://publicworks.baltimorecity.gov/new-water-billing-system
When you get your water bill this month, take a good look because you’ll never see another one like it again. The September bill will be the last one produced by the Department of Public Works’ current water billing system, which has been used for more than three decades, before the switch to BaltiMeter Billing. Starting in October, water bills produced by BaltiMeter Billing will arrive monthly, will be based on how much water customers use – not a pre-set minimum – and have other customer-friendly information. Please be aware that starting October 11, 2016, water and sewer rates will adjust by a combined 9.4 percent. But with the elimination of minimum billing, customers will see different impacts; some will even see their bills decline! For your convenience, DPW has placed a calculator on their website to help customers estimate how the new rates will affect them.  Click Here to try the calculator. For more details on BaltiMeter Billing and how you will be affected please look for the insert in your September bill, click the video below or go to the New Water Billing System Tab of the DPW website. Information courtesty of the Department of Public Works.
