Council President announces new committee assignments

Baltimore, MD – City Council President Brandon M. Scott announced new committee assignments for members of the Baltimore City Council on Thursday.  

Recently, the Council has seen reorganization with President Scott replacing former President Bernard C. “Jack” Young, and the appointment of Councilmember Danielle McCray to represent the 2nd district.

The announcement is headlined by the restructuring of Committees that will create more standalone committees for the council to have a deeper focus on critical issues facing Baltimore.

The Council will again have a standalone Health Committee chaired by Councilman Kristerfer Burnett. The Committee will begin to look at the tremendous health issues facing Baltimore from substance abuse to mental health and trauma. It will also be responsible for others matters concerning residents’ health and environmental health including the regulation of public health related issues.

The Land Use and Transportation Committee will now be divided into separate committees with Land Use and Transportation each being standalone committees. The newly created Transportation Committee will be chaired by Councilman Ryan Dorsey. The Committee is charged with focusing on the severe transportation challenges facing our city and developing short- and long-term solutions to solve them.

Because of the ransomware attack, President Scott has formed a select committee, co-chaired by Councilman Eric Costello and Councilman Isaac "Yitzy" Schleifer, to examine the City's coordination of cybersecurity efforts, including the Administration's response to the cybersecurity attack and testimony from cybersecurity experts.

President Scott is also forming a separate Legislative Investigations Committee to better employ the Council’s investigative functions given to it by the charter. With the deep need for accountability and transparency within city government currently the creation of this committee Chaired by Councilman Burnett in accordance with the charter is critical.

 “The Chairs and Vice Chairs of these Council Committee are the leadership team that I believe is best suited to begin the critical changes needed to move Baltimore forward,” said Council President Scott. “In addition, I look forward to watching our senior members like Chairman Ed Reisinger and Vice President Sharon Middleton groom the next generation of leaders of their respective committees in Councilwomen Shannon Sneed and Danielle McCray. As I said on my first day as President the council will be focused on the issues most important for Baltimore and these committees set a structure that will allow for that to happen.”
