Council President Scott Statement on Commissioner Harrison’s Decision to Arrest BPD Sergeant

"Today a Sergeant in the Baltimore Police Department was arrested and suspended from the Baltimore Police Department. Commissioner Harrison made the right decision charging, arresting, and suspending this officer. I applaud him for his swift action and am strongly encouraged by his handling of this incident.

I have reviewed the body camera footage of the incident in question. It is disturbing. The officer’s actions portrayed in the video are unacceptable, weak and counterproductive. We will not make progress on the crime fight until Baltimore’s communities can have their faith restored in the Department. And as long as there are BPD officers who conducting themselves the way this officer did, we will never restore that trust.

During my time on the Council I have been a staunch advocate for increased transparency within BPD and was a member of the Baltimore's Body Camera Workgroup. I will continue to fight for transparency and reforms until Baltimore has a police department that all Baltimoreans and our hard working law abiding police officers can once again believe in."
