Council President reaffirms commitment to restoring the public's trust in local government

BALTIMORE, MD (December 23, 2019) — Council President Brandon M. Scott issued the following statement in response to this morning's announcement by U.S. Attorney Robert Hur:

"I am disappointed by this morning's news that Delegate Cheryl Glenn is facing federal wire fraud and bribery charges related to legislation she worked on as a state elected official.

Public officials must be held to the highest of standards. Your job as an elected servant is to advance the interest of the people you represent, not yourself. Sadly, this news further undermines the public's trust in their state and local officials in a year when we've seen too many stories like this one.

The public deserves to have faith in their government. As City Council President, I will continue working with my colleagues to pass ethics reforms and change the structure of our local government so that it is more democratic and less prone to corruption. We will be considering many of those charter amendments in the new Equity and Structure Committee, chaired by Councilman Bill Henry, that I created last week.

Cleaning up city government and restoring the public's trust in the work we do each day as elected officials is one of my top priorities."

— Council President Scott
