"Investing Where Baltimore Lives"
October 12, 2007

Dear Friends:

This week I attended a graduation of the Gaudenzia Drug and Alcohol Rehabilitation Center, and I also spoke to participants in the Recovery Walks Rally in Pimlico. I was very inspired by the courageous stories of men and women in recovery. As a lifelong Baltimore resident, I am only too familiar with the consequences of addiction in the City, affecting far too many of our fellow citizens and impacting families and communities at large throughout the city. We need to break the dangerous cycle between heroin addiction and crime. If we can encourage thousands of addicts into rehabilitation today, they and their families will be able to live more productive lives tomorrow. We can make major gains in Baltimore’s crime problem and improve the social structure and stability of many families who today live under the scourge of drug abuse.

In 2000, the Congress passed the Drug Addiction Treatment Act, a groundbreaking law that allows certified physicians to prescribe appropriate medications in their offices, like the drug buprenorphine, to help people trying to break the shackles of heroin addiction. Buprenorphine, (pronounced BYOO-prah-NOR-fin) essentially prevents the brain from experiencing the addictive effects of heroin. Many addicts have turned their lives around by using buprenorphine and participating in treatment. Mothers reconnect with her children; countless marriages are saved; and thousands of addicts are enabled to return to the workforce and become healthy, productive citizens. With innovative treatments like buprenorphine for heroin addiction and the expansion of treatment on demand, Baltimore is taking steps to realize the dream of constructive lives free from the shackles of addiction.

It is the responsibility of all of us to facilitate the reentry of addicts who are trying to make their way back into productive life. We as city leaders must expand access to treatment, in partnership with the business community who must expand access to jobs for recovering workers. For more information on buprenorphine or drug treatment, contact Baltimore Substance Systems at 410-637-1900.

Akeelah and The Bee Actress Visits Baltimore Middle Schools

Teen actress Keke Palmer, best known for her role in the movie, Akeelah and The Bee, took time out of her busy acting and singing schedule for peer talk about the importance of education and staying in school. Palmer visited students at Booker T. Washington and Harlem Park Middle Schools last month. She shared how education was key to her success. The movie Akeelah and The Bee was the catalyst for the creation of the Baltimore Bee Spelling Competition, which was held last spring. Community partners Catapult Online, Downtown Locker Room, and Ravens Tight End Daniel Wilcox look forward to sponsoring the 3rd Annual Baltimore Bee in March. The local winner represents Baltimore in the national spelling bee.
