"Investing Where Baltimore Lives"
September 7, 2007

Dear Friends:

This week I visited a number of Baltimore's senior centers, which is always a treat for me as I have always appreciated and admired the quiet dignity of so many of our senior citizens. Our seniors are the backbone of so many of Baltimore's neighborhoods. They teach us the timeless lessons of courage, sacrifice, and love. By sharing their wisdom and experience, they encourage us all to revisit great ideas that worked in the past—and help keep us from repeating past missteps. Their example shows us how to persevere in the face of hardship, care for others in need, and take pride in our communities.

I also visited George Washington Elementary School to distribute backpacks to the students, who achieved excellent scores on the Maryland State Assessments. It is truly inspiring that 75 percent of these students are eligible for school lunches, and yet they performed among the best in Maryland. Our Baltimore Public School children are proving that your zip code does not determine your quality of education. Seeing the kids' faces this week took me back to my own childhood. I remember the first day of school: it was always a little more fun and exciting if you had some new supplies. I was able to relive that feeling at this event, watching those kids. This was a big deal, and it meant a lot to them. In a child’s early development, everything they experience matters, everything we do leaves its mark.

As Council President, I fight the good fight every day to plant seeds for the City's future, remedying the past, and you don’t often know your efforts will turn out. But when you create a moment like that for a child, you unequivocally know that you have done something good, creating some oasis of hope in their lives.

Certainly we have our challenges in Baltimore. But underlying so many of our social ills is that generations of City residents have wanted and needed hope that things could get better. I believe that as we weigh the decisions for the future of Baltimore, we need to bring to the table both the energy and curiosity of our young people and the wisdom and foresight of the elderly. They are our most vulnerable residents—and two of our most precious resources to building the future for Baltimore.

City Middle School Receives Grant to Support Health and Fitness

Congratulations to Diggs-Johnson Middle School #162! The Southwest Baltimore school has received a $5,000 grant from The People’s Community Health Centers and the Morgan State University Center for Health Disparity Solutions. The funds will support the school's Liv'in and Learn'in FIT Club, which provides a health/fitness curriculum, workshops, nutritious cooking activities, field trips and needed equipment. The purpose of the enrichment program is to battle the increase in health disparity and obesity. Also, thanks to support from Arts in Education through the Maryland State Arts Council, the school has been approved for a dance residency program.
