"Investing Where Baltimore Lives" |
August 3, 2007 |
Dear Friends:
Tuesday, August 7 is National Night Out: America's Night Out Against Crime
Several weeks ago, we asked communities holding National Night Out events to contact us, and we have received many responses from participating communities all over Baltimore. I encourage you to check out our map of Baltimore Night Out Against Crime events and attend your community's event.
With the induction of Oriole great Cal Ripken into the Baseball Hall of Fame this week, we were reminded that there is great power and dignity in showing up and maintaining a positive attitude through difficult times. Like Cal, we too can make great strides in taking back our neighborhoods by showing up. Who has more of a stake in our homes and communities than we do? When we show up and invest time, energy, and love in our homes, families, and communities, it will pay dividends many times over for our City now and in the future.
We talk about Baltimore as if it’s one thing, when of course it’s many Baltimores: It’s Highlandtown, Ten Hills, Berea, Washington Village, Butchers Hill. It is this remarkable diversity that is Baltimore’s' great strength and the key to its potential. Baltimore’s neighborhoods all have their own culture—and their own priorities and concerns. In community meetings all over the City, I talk to residents who have a vision of the Baltimore they want to live in. Building community involvement and collaboration is a key first step. Everyone has gifts and spirit to lend to the cause to leave your part of the world a little better than you found it. By simply getting to know our neighbors, we can use our shared goodwill and civic pride to make the City a better place to live.
City police, Mayor Dixon and I will be stopping by various neighborhoods on Tuesday night. Let’s show the police we care about our neighborhoods, and that we are a united front fighting drugs and crime in our communities. For more on National Night Out, please see the President's CitySpot below.

Baltimore's Neigborhoods Celebrate National Night Out
National Night Out: America's Night Out Against Crime!
Check for a celebration in your neighborhood
The "24th Annual National Night Out" is a unique crime/drug prevention event sponsored by the National Association of Town Watch. Last year's National Night Out campaign involved citizens, law enforcement agencies, civic groups, businesses, neighborhood organizations and local officials from over 10,000 communities from all 50 states, U.S. territories, Canadian cities and military bases worldwide. In all, over 34 million people participated in NNO 2006.
NATIONAL NIGHT OUT is designed to:
- Heighten crime and drug prevention awareness;
- Generate support for, and participation in, local anticrime programs
- Strengthen neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships; and
- Send a message to criminals letting them know that neighborhoods are organized and fighting back.
Along with the traditional display of outdoor lights and front porch vigils, cities, towns and neighborhoods 'celebrate' National Night Out with a variety of events and activities such as:
- block parties
- cookouts
- visits from local police departments
- parades
- flashlight walks
- contests
- youth programs
These activities promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships in our fight for a safer nation. Plus, the benefits your community will derive from NNO will most certainly extend well beyond that night.
