"Investing Where Baltimore Lives" |
June 22, 2007 |
Dear Friends:
The citizens of Baltimore frequently hear Mayor Dixon and I refer to the City we love as a collection of strong, healthy communities. And the only way to truly shepherd those neighborhoods in need of revitalization to rebirth is to foster and expand that sense of community. Only when people become vested in their neighborhood can we begin to address the challenges facing us.
As we look forward to the summer months, I encourage all Baltimoreans to take advantage of the many community events offered to residents of Charm City. The culture, diversity, and spirit found in events such as LatinoFest, the African American Heritage Festival, and ArtScape paint an exciting portrait of the heritage of Baltimore. Ours is a City that values the contributions of diverse communities to the growth of Baltimore. Celebrations of that diversity allow Baltimore to express itself as the cultural center that it is.
This week, I will visit the New Haven Lounge in Northwood in recognition of June as Black Music Month. The New Haven Lounge, which has provided live jazz entertainment to its customers since 1962, is a perfect example of the character of Baltimore exemplified through community investment. Venues like this, and cultural festivals throughout the Summer, offer an opportunity for all Baltimoreans to reconnect with their heritage and to learn about those of other cultures.
Please visit the Baltimore Office of Promotion and Arts at www.bop.org for a complete listing of festivals and other events.

Patterson Grad Selected for Entrepreneurship Seminar
Congratulations to 2007 Patterson High School graduate Raymond Black. He has been chosen to participate in the 6th Annual Advanced Entrepreneurship Seminar in New York City. The weeklong seminar, July 20-27, is sponsored by Oppenheimer Funds and the National Foundation for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE). NFTE teaches young people from low-income communities to think like entrepreneurs, so they can take control of their futures. NFTE has been active in Baltimore since 2004 and reaches 700 students annually.
Raymond completed NFTE's 40-hour program at Patterson, where he developed his business plan for a lawn care service. During the seminar, participants will hear from business leaders on topics including marketing, finance and social entrepreneurship. They will also have the chance to participate in three different competitions: an elevator pitch contest; marketing contest; and the final business plan competition. The top prize for the business plan competition is $5,000.
Continued success to Raymond as he competes for the big prize!
