The inaugural day of service pays tribute to Mayor Schaefer, who dedicated his life to improving his beloved City of Baltimore, while working for all its residents. “Mayor Schaefer used his energy, intellect and political know-how to improve the city he loved,” Council President Young said. “I am proud to continue his legacy of service with a citywide cleanup initiative.” Council President Young will kick off Do It Now Day on what would have been Mayor Schaefer’s 90th birthday by helping to restore the old stone path at Mothers’ Garden in Clifton Park. In 1984 Mayor Schaefer rededicated Mothers’ Garden in honor of his late mother and all the devoted mothers of Baltimore. After his work at Mothers’ Garden, the Council President will travel to Pimlico Elementary School to clean up and landscape the school’s grounds. He will finish up Do It Now Day by applying a fresh coat of paint to the interior of the Cahill Performing Arts Center. The Council President also encourages city residents to participate in community service activities, such as taking a few minutes during your lunch break to go outside and pick up trash, check in on seniors in your neighborhood, help neighbors with household tasks or yard work, join with neighbors to clean your block’s curbs, alleys and areas around your homes, or organize a community walk around your neighborhood and report any problems to 311.
