Supporting Drug and Alcohol Rehab and Recovery
Dear Baltimoreans,
September is National Alcoholism and Drug Addiction Recovery Month, and I am proud to have participated in several events that celebrate the progress being made in our city as we continue to help our fellow citizens struggling with substance abuse.
I recognize that too many of our residents are affected in some way by drugs or alcohol and the problems that accompany addiction. But I also know that recovery is a viable path to sobriety for those battling substance abuse. That is why I fully support the many groups in Baltimore that make rehabilitation a real option.
The National Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence of Maryland (NCAAD) and the Tuerk House each hosted events to raise awareness about the prevalence of drug and alcohol addiction in Baltimore. At the Tuerk House on Friday, August 27, I spoke with politicians from Maryland and Washington, D.C., as well as experts from Baltimore Substance Abuse Systems (bSAS) and other organizations and agencies about the current state of recovery efforts in Baltimore. A few weeks later, on September 13, I had the honor of receiving the "Heavy Hitters" award from the Baltimore Orioles during a game at Camden Yards alongside Destiny D’Urso, a brave Baltimorean who is currently recovering from substance abuse. The award is given to individuals who make important contributions to the community.
In 2008, 30 percent of individuals admitted to Maryland Alcohol and Drug Abuse Administration treatment centers were from Baltimore – a rate three times higher than any other jurisdiction in Maryland. In 2008 nearly 1,200 Marylanders received substance abuse treatment from a program operated by the Tuerk house, in addition to similar programs offered by the city. These statistics clearly depict a troubling substance abuse problem in Baltimore.
Our citizens suffering from drug dependency are our brothers and sisters, neighbors and co-workers, and they are in desperate need of a helping hand. If we remain committed to providing resources and expertise we will certainly be able to help more Baltimoreans live sober lives.
