City of Baltimore Big Brothers Big Sisters Mentoring Initiative

City Council President Stephanie Rawlings-Blake is launching a new mentoring initiative to encourage more of our dedicated City employees to get engaged in the lives of Baltimore's young people.

Big Brothers Big Sisters is the oldest, largest and one of the most effective youth mentoring organizations in the United States. Today, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Central Maryland currently serves 550 Baltimore City youth with an additional 255 youth awaiting mentors, 136 of which are young men. Some City agencies are already engaging our workforce to participate in this important effort. The Baltimore Police Department encourages our police officers to become mentors through the "Bigs in Blue" program.

Currently, there are about 50 Baltimore City employees who are matched with a young person or are in the process of being matched as part of the Big Brothers Big Sisters mentoring program. Big Brothers Big Sisters offers flexible and convenient mentoring opportunities. City employees who are interested may participate in the traditional community-based one-on-one mentoring program, or they may choose the weekly lunchtime mentoring program at two public schools very close to City Hall and nearby government buildings.

"With more than 15,000 employees, I believe that there is opportunity for the City of Baltimore to do more to provide quality mentors," said Rawlings-Blake. "I encourage City of Baltimore employees and all Baltimore residents to help the children of the city we all work to serve."
